Team sports don't come much more high speed and thrilling than handball (also known as Olympic or European Handball), a combination of three of Australia’s favourite sports - soccer, netball and basketball - it's fast, it's fun and it can be played indoors or on the beach. High-scoring, dynamic and athletic, it is an outstanding spectator sport.
Play takes place on a court measuring 40x20 metres, which is larger than a basketball court. The two teams consist of seven players (including one goalkeeper), who dribble and pass the ball with the aim of throwing the ball into the opposition goal (slightly larger than a hockey goal).
Handball games are played over two 30-minute periods during which it is not uncommon to see more than 30 goals apiece.
Working the ball into a shooting position can be eye-catching enough, but handball's greatest spectacle comes when the best players wind up to shoot. The best can leap in the air and uncoil their bodies like springs, the explosive nature of this movement propelling the ball at speeds of around 100 kilometres an hour. So, if it’s sporting fireworks by way of goals you’re out for, look no further, and join us!
